چکیده

Introduction: Pakistan is situated in the Afro-Asian stone belt. We come across a vast majority of patients having renal calculi. The treatment stones has evolved from open surgery to extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) and retrograde intrarenal (RIRS) past 20 years. Objective: To determine mean skin distance (SSD) undergoing ESWL for pelvic compare SSD between with successful failed outcomes stones. Subjects Methods: This descriptive case series study was carried out Department Urology, Institute Kidney Diseases Hayatabad Medical Complex Peshawar September 2017 March 2018. A total 50 were enrolled study. After consent, non-contrast computed tomography kidney ureter blabber (NCCT KUB) performed measured. All underwent ESWL. patient status either as free or residual based on NCCT KUB result noted 3rd month. Patients no fragments defined procedure successful. Results: age 39.02 +/- 12.16 33 (66%) male 17 (34%) female. 39 (78%) patients. 11 (22%) had outcome significantly lower than (10.9 3.0 vs 14.8 1.8 cm, p-value = 0.001) Practical Implication: results will help urologists deciding appropriate modality Conclusion: conclude that comparison those outcome. Therefore pre-treatment should be used which might predict Keywords: Renal calculi, Skin distance, shockwave lithotripsy.

Analyzing the Effect of Distance from Skin to Stone by Computed Tomography Scan on the Extracorporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy Stone-Free Rate of Renal Stones

PURPOSE To determine whether the distance from skin to stone, as measured by computed tomography (CT) scans, could affect the stone-free rate achieved via extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) in renal stone patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the records 573 patients who had undergone ESWL at our institution between January 2006 and January 2010 for urinary sto...

Percutaneous nephrolithotomy vs. extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy for treating a 20–30 mm single renal pelvic stone

OBJECTIVE To compare the efficacy, safety and cost of extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL) and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PNL) for treating a 20-30 mm single renal pelvic stone. PATIENTS AND METHODS The computerised records of patients who underwent PNL or ESWL for a 20-30 mm single renal pelvic stone between January 2006 and December 2012 were reviewed retrospectively. Patients age...

How do stone attenuation and skin-to-stone distance in computed tomography influence the performance of shock wave lithotripsy in ureteral stone disease?

BACKGROUND Shock wave lithotripsy (SWL) is a noninvasive, safe, and efficient treatment option for ureteral stones. Depending on stone location and size, the overall stone-free rate (SFR) varies significantly. Failure of stone disintegration results in unnecessary exposure to shock waves and radiation and requires alternative treatment procedures, which increases medical costs. It is therefore ...

Predictors of success for stone fragmentation and stone-free rate after extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy in the treatment of upper urinary tract stones.

PURPOSE To evaluate factors affecting the success rate of stone fragmentation and stone-free rate after extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (SWL) in treatment of upper urinary tract stones. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 121 patients with upper urinary tract calculi underwent SWL treatment. RESULTS Success rate of stone fragmentation after SWL was 73.6% (89/121). In 89 patients who had s...

Treatment of renal stones by extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy: an update.

AIM Despite the extensive experience with minimal invasive stone therapy, there are still different views on the ideal management of renal stones. MATERIALS AND METHODS Analysis of the literature includes more than 14,000 patients. We have compared these data with long-term results of two major stone centers in Germany. The results have been compared concerning the anatomical kidney situation...
